Remember The Name - Fort Minor |

Character History: At the time of his birth, everyone held high hopes for Shikamaru. As the only son of Shikato Nara, a typical but talented pirate known for making up 1/3 of the infamous InoShikaChou trio, many believed Shikamaru would be outstanding. He was told from a very young age that it was in his destiny to become a pirate just like his father; and, to one day start the next generation of the InoShikaChou trio with the children of his dad's comrades.
As a young boy, Shikamaru openly welcomed this idea, even growing excited that one day, he would be a famous pirate. But, as time went by, his eagerness faded, until he realized piracy wasn't all he had thought it to be.
Shikamaru soon grew to despise the pirate's life -- a life of chores, physical effort, battle, and poor conditions. He found it far too troublesome for his liking, being a boy who would rather watch the clouds than swing a sword. He stopped trying to excel -- actually, he just stopped trying. His father and all those around him were crushed -- the first and only son of the genius pirate Shikatou Nara was a failure.
But one man still believed in young Shikamaru -- Asuma Sarutobi. He saw great potential in the boy others had given up hope on. He noted Shikamaru's technique and strategy; how Shikamaru really worked. After a series of tests and experiments, Asuma discovered that Shikamaru, was, in a way, even more skilled than his father and possesed an extremely powerful mind. But Shikamaru was terribly lazy, too lazy to even be bothered. Shikamaru had the blood of a pirate, but the mindset of a peasant.
Character Personality:
The first thing most people would notice about Shikamaru is, without argument, his blatant laziness. Hard work is his biggest vice, and he knows it. He's hardly willing to even pick up the sword, much less fight with it. He groans and complains as soon as even a hint of work is mentioned.
But laziness isn't the only aspect to Shikamaru. He posseses an IQ of over 200 (not that anyone would know that in the 1600s) and a gifted, analytical mind. Shikamaru is the kind to think over a situation before acting -- thus making his battle style a little uncanny. In a fight, Shikamaru always thinks through his every move -- not the slightest effort or technique is wasted. There is a meaning behind everything he does, and each step takes him closer to his goal. Shikamaru often devises complex and advanced strategies to use in the thick of battle, unlike most of his kind.
Shikamaru is also known for acting quite mature for his age, oftentimes seeming more like an old man than a teenage boy. Shikamaru takes great delight pleasure in complex and difficult mind games and is often able to outwit even those older than him. Shikamaru prefers to live a quiet, peaceful life, quite unlike his current lifestyle.
But Shikamaru also cares deeply for his friends and comrades -- at times, even more than he cares for his own safety. When real danger arises, Shikamaru will willingly step in and try his best to protect them. He refuses to let harm befall his companions -- and if it does anyways, he won't let it go very lightly.
Beyond Shikamaru's aloof and lethargic appearance, he is a sharp thinker, and more than that, a loyal friend.
Example RP:
Shikamaru sighed heavily and flopped down into the tall weeds gracelessly. Closing his eyes, he inhaled, then exhaled; the air tasted like salt in the crisp breeze blowing off the ocean. Salt, huh. So he could smell it again already. And he knew it would be all he could smell for a few days until he grew accustomed to it once more.
But that's what happened when they hit land. Shikamaru had been at sea in his father's ship for two months. When they finally reached that far-off land known as Mexico, it had been diffictult and trying to readjust to dry land. And now, just after he had gotten used to the stillness of the ground, the sights and sounds of civilization, and gotten the smell of salt out of his nose, the ship was already taking off again!
Shikamaru's obsidian eyes drifted upwards with a bored, monotone gaze, glancing at the throngs of people milling about not far away. From his shady vantage point in the grass, he watched people bustling about the docks, going to the ship and back with armfuls of supplies and food. Shikamaru recognized a few of them, others he didn't. He knew they'd be picking up new prisoners passengers from this city, and others would stay in Mexico. Another set of new faces to memorize. A new destination, a new goal.
Suddenly his head snapped up.
"Shikamaru!"
That was his father's voice. Scanning the crowds, Shikamaru spotted the tall form of his father, arms laden with crates of...what was it? Rum?
The boy sighed heavily to himself and pulled himself to his feet lethargically. That was the other thing. No matter how hard he tried to avoid it, reloading the ship to set out again was always a lot of hard work. Not that it would make any difference -- they always ran out of food in the first month anyways.
If there was one thing Shikamaru hated more than hard work, it was pointless hard work.
